The fruits belong to the good team and within them there are superstars. Among these is the blueberry, which benefits from this dichotomy. Because there is a food that became bad, almost the demon of nutrition. This is sugar, which has everything to lose; It makes you fat, creates addiction, is responsible for countless diseases, etc. But the dilemma arises. Can we live without something sweet in life? Without that candy or dessert that gives us a moment of pleasure? Luckily, as in every successful movie, the bad guy is finally defeated by a good guy. This is the blueberry. It is sweet, and most importantly, it is practical, this tribute being fundamental to being successful in societies in which there is never enough time. It is consumed directly, without utensils, without seeds, it does not make a mess, nor does it stick, there is no need to cut, it has a delicate sugar/acidity ratio, bright color and pleasant texture. Plus, it comes in small portions and disposable containers. It has all the advantages of candy and is consumed without any conscience; What's more, we do good for our health. Its benefits are multiple: antioxidant, benefits cardiovascular health, the neurological, immune, muscular and visual systems and prevents urinary infections.

Thanks to its production in different regions, it is currently offered throughout the year. The large chains quickly visualized the business. They offer it visibly throughout the year, they carry out promotions and offers. Its price became accessible to a large part of consumers. Mothers have discovered it as an ideal ally, when pediatricians prohibit the consumption of sweets during the first years of their children's lives. Another factor that contributes to its success is the trend towards improved varieties. This seeks a fruit with outstanding characteristics (adequate balance of sugar/acidity, crunchy, tasty), good conservation and consistency, ensuring the buyer an outstanding fruit that is always the same. Nothing is worse for sales than disappointment when consuming something that does not meet expectations.

The southern hemisphere is a pillar of this success. This year a new export record was reached, exceeding 500.00 tons exported, which doubled exports in just 6 years. Obviously Peru is the great leader, contributing 76% of the total. Although its current expansion is already slower than in the first years of the boom, it continues to grow as the surface area expands, young plantations reach full production, improving cultivation techniques and replacing old varieties with new, more productive ones. In the campaign that is ending, it exported 382,000 tons, doubling its exports in just 4 years. The other southern countries do not show this dizzying growth, their production and exports have stabilized. Productive, climatic, logistical and cost problems stopped further expansion. Chile maintains second place, exporting some 93,000 tons of fresh blueberries in 2025/26, maintaining its leadership in frozen blueberries. It is followed by South Africa with 26,000 tons and the smaller suppliers (Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador) who together have exported just over 5,000 tons.

The main market continues to be the US, but its importance has decreased. Traditionally it received half of the southern shipments. But in recent years other destinations had more marked growth, which is why their current share was reduced to 42%. Europe advanced as a major destination, with the imported volume approaching that of the US. In 2025/26 it received 39% of the total. Asia is the destination that registers the most marked growth, although it is still far from the two traditional destinations. In 2025/26 it received 17% of the total exported by the southern hemisphere. Within this great continent, China stands out as a buyer of blueberries. But also other countries in the Far East (Korea, Japan, Taiwan) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India) are becoming interesting markets.

In this way, a new successful season closes and the projections for the next one are no less auspicious.

Authors: Ing.Agr.
